ART 189Special Topics in Sculpture
Special topics in sculpture as announced, concentrating on specific aspects of subject matter and media.
Prerequisite(s): One course from ART 20H, ART 120, ART 121, ART 122, ART 124, ART 125, ART 129, ART 172, ART 175, ART 180B, ART 183, ART 188; and two non-sculpture/intermedia/public art lower-division studios from ART 15, ART 20G, ART 20I, ART 20J, ART 20K, ART 20L, ART 26. Enrollment is restricted to art majors.
- Carbon, Climate and Campus - What roles can art play in envisioning and guiding a more resource responsible and climate resilient future? In this studio art course students will develop a closer relationship with the complex place that is the UCSC campus through the lenses of land-use history and changing carbon cycles over time, and in the context of the campus's current transition from fossil fuel dependent infrastructure to more sustainable designs and power sources. Focuses will include natural history and evolution of the landscape, indigenous lifeways, non-human ecosystems, settler land-use and extraction, and the evolution of the University in the 60 years of UCSCs existence. Guest speakers and local field trips will enrich students? studio work as they develop their own creative engagements, grappling with complex histories and bringing new futures into being. Student outputs may include individual and collaborative artworks, proposals for future funded public art pieces, and/or murals/temporary installations at sites on campus.
