CRSN 23Campus Natural History Practicum

Develop practical skills and knowledge in naturalist observation. Acquire an overview of the field of natural history, particularly applied to the UCSC campus. Document an evolving and multidimensional personal experience of natural spaces, including, but not limited to, wilderness. (Formerly KRSG 3.)

• Each week will focus on a different aspect of the natural world at UCSC. For each class expect to be hiking on unpaved trails for 90 minutes. Many weeks will have a guest instructor lead the trip who is an expert in that week's focal subject. You will need a field notebook to take field notes on each trip on what the instructor(s) is talking about and what you are observing. There will be homework each week to prepare you for the next week's class. Weekly subjects include, but are not limited to: plant species and habitats, plant diseases, fungi, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, native Californian uses of plants, insects, and the intertidal zone. The course will meet at a number of locations including the north perimeter parking lot, the Arboretum, and the Coastal Science Campus. There is an independent project due at the end of the quarter.
