ECE 293Advanced Topics in Electrical and Computer Engineering

Graduate seminar on a research topic in electrical engineering that varies with the particular instructor. Typical topics include, but are not limited to, electromagnetics, antennas, electronics biotechnology, nanotechnology, signal processing, communications, VLSI, and MEMS. Prerequisite(s):Enrollment is by permission of the instructor and is restricted to graduate students. In some quarters course will be taught in conjunction with ECE 183. (Formerly EE 293.)

  • Class Topic: High-Performance Power Converter Design.
  • Focusing on the practical design and implementation of various power converter topologies (primarily DC-DC converters). Emphasizes power stage optimization with respect to efficiency, density, cost, slew-rate, etc. Explores several key aspects of hardware development, including component selection (e.g. Si/GaN/SiC, passive non-idealities), supporting circuit blocks (e.g. gate-drive, level-shift, feedback sensing, start-up), packaging, thermal design, parasitics and layout. The majority of the course grade will be based on a class project. Priority enrollment is reserved for graduate students, and seniors may enroll with instructor permission. ECE171, ECE177 or equivalent preferred. Suggested: ECE174 or equivalent. Please contact the instructor to enroll.
