ECON 149The Economies of East and Southeast Asia

Examines the pattern of international trade, investment, and industrial structure in Asia. Examines competing explanations of rapid growth of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan; presents an overview of economic developments in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Concludes with an analysis of high technology trade and multinationals in Asia in 2000 and beyond.

• Prerequisites only Econ 1 and Econ 2 It is a 5 credit course that satisfies Economics Upper Division (UD) elective for the following Majors: Business Management Economics Major, Economics Major, Global Economics Major and Economics/Mathematics Major. K.C. Fung has experience with the private sector such as Morgan Stanley, BBVA, HSBC, OpenAI, etc. He has taught at Stanford University, University of California, Santa Cruz, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Mount Holyoke College and Executive MBA courses with London Business School , HKU Business School and Columbia University Business School. He has taught courses in Business Schools for 10 years. He has also worked in the U.S. Government. He was a Senior Economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers and he got a Letter of Commendation from the U.S. President. He also has work experience with the United States International Trade Commission, the Office of U.S. Trade Representative, The U.S. Department of State, etc. Econ 149 will cover timely and important business and economic issues in Asia, Asian relationships with California, the United States, Latin America and Europe.
