GCH 190Global and Community Health Task Force

Students conduct rigorous research on real world health challenges with a view to describing the associated problems accurately and recommending responses. All the work of research and writing is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary. Task Force members are comprised of seniors from both the B.A. and B.S. degrees in GCH. They work closely together under the guidance of the instructor who prepares them to collaborate effectively. The final report always includes writing from all the students in the team. Students are responsible for all of the associated editing, as well as a final presentation of the report to an external evaluator.

• Title - From Field to Fork: Occupational Health Across the Food System Description - This course focuses on the occupational health and labor conditions of workers across the entire food system. From farmworkers in California's agricultural fields, to meatpacking and processing plant employees, retail food workers in grocery stores and restaurants, the often-invisible food waste workers who handle what the system discards, and the paid and unpaid caregivers who feed households every day, the workers who feed our nation and our world face disproportionate rates of injury and illness. This Task Force will investigate the scope and causes of these occupational health challenges, with particular attention to how race, immigration status, gender, and socioeconomic inequality shape vulnerability and access to care. The Task Force will produce a comprehensive report with evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at improving conditions for food system workers at local, state, and national levels.
