Explores how theory can illuminate various forms of cultural production from art and cinema to popular and material cultures. Considers how scholars and visual producers utilize theory creatively and in the study of aesthetic objects and experiences.

  • For Fall ’26, HAVC 141J will thematically explore cultural trauma in contemporary art and visual culture. While surveying a diversity of media forms (painting, photography, documentary and narrative cinema) the course will investigate how visual artists representationally explore themes of personal, political, and cultural trauma in their creative production.
