HISC 132Who belongs? Nations, Nationalism, and Political Community

Nationalism is on the rise across the globe, with far-right forces claiming supremacy of national interests over human rights, lives, bodies and habitats. Historically, however, anti-colonial movements also used the language of nationalism in their struggle for self-determination. Can nationalism both be progressive and oppressive? Does the word “nationalism” still explain anything? Looking at nationalism in its historical context of global capitalism and imperialism, course brings theoretical texts in conversation with historical documents and cultural artifacts to see how abstract concepts such as “the nation” can have the most tangible impact on our daily lives and the way we imagine change.
