• From the Instructor: This course is an investigation into one of the most important (and infamous) writers in English, John Milton. A social and theological radical and political revolutionary, Milton was uncompromising and unyielding as a writer and thinker across various genres. We shall read Comus and Paradise Lost. Our collective study of these works examines the question of temptation; what it means to resist temptation and what it means to yield to it. We shall devote extensive time to considering and analyzing how these texts construct gender and sexuality through the prism of temptation. We will also contextualize Milton’s poetry and prose against the tumultuous historical period of the British Civil Wars and the factors that led the English Parliament to take the unprecedented step of trying their King and executing him publicly. Distribution Requirements: Pre-1750.
