PHIL 22Introduction to Ethical Theory

A consideration of ethical issues and theories focusing on the foundation of moral value and the principles governing character and behavior. Designed to extend and develop the student's abilities in philosophical reasoning about ethics.

• From the Instructor: How do I live a good life? Will my life go well for me so long as I am happy – or do I also need my life to be meaningful, or perhaps meaningfully free? How do I learn to be a good person – or a good student, or daughter, or friend? And when I’m torn between my personal goals or relations, and people far across the world, what’s the right thing to do? How do I act in a way that treats other people with respect? This course provides a brief introduction to some of the answers philosophers have given to these and other questions in ethical theory. It does so while paying particular attention to the skills of argument and analysis, so as to teach you how to write a philosophy paper. The course is divided into three units: (1) living well; (2) being good; and (3) acting rightly.
