PHIL 290CAdvanced Topics in Ethics

Topics vary but the course focuses on major questions in contemporary ethical theory, or figures influential on contemporary moral philosophy. Examines different foundational ethical principles and arguments for those principles, contrasting accounts of moral action and moral motivation, as well as the epistemological and motivational role of emotions in ethical theory.

• This course strives to create a community of inquiry engaged with the examination of public philosophy. We will take the term “public philosophy” to include any philosophical work done outside of the standard university contexts (i.e. other than traditional research and publication and graduate and undergraduate teaching). The first six weeks of the course focus on popular modes of public philosophy, including philosophy for children, philosophy in the popular media, and field philosophy. The remainder of the course focuses on public philosophy topics chosen by students participating in the course.
