PRTR 47Zines and Community-Based Research

5 creditsGE IMUndergraduateStudent Option

Experience immersive research strategies focused on critical social issues through the lens of book arts and self-publishing. Drawing on approaches to field research from the social sciences, students work on a collaborative project that explores local knowledge, organizing, and history in collaboration with community members and organizations. The class culminates in a DIY zine project showcasing research findings, allowing the work to extend beyond the class itself through circulation. Students gain important skills for managing short book-length projects, including design, layout, writing, illustration, printing, binding, and considerations for distribution.
